How to Spot VIN Cloning and Odometer Fraud
VIN cloning and odometer rollback are two of the most common used-car scams in the US. Here's what to look for.
What is VIN cloning?
VIN cloning is when someone copies the VIN from a legitimately titled vehicle onto a stolen or salvage vehicle of the same make and model, then uses the clean VIN's paperwork to sell it. The buyer ends up with a stolen car titled under someone else's identity — and can lose both the vehicle and the money paid for it when it's discovered.
Red flags for a cloned VIN
- VIN plate on the dashboard looks re-riveted, glued, or doesn't sit flush
- The VIN on the dashboard, door jamb, and title don't all match exactly
- Engraved or etched VINs on windows don't match the dashboard plate
- Title is from a state the seller has no connection to, especially if the vehicle has always supposedly lived elsewhere
- Seller pushes for cash, a fast close, or meeting somewhere other than their home/business address
- Price is noticeably below market for that make, model, and mileage
How decoding the VIN helps
Run the VIN through a decoder and compare the result against the actual car in front of you. If the VIN decodes to a different body style, engine, trim, or model year than the physical vehicle, that's a strong sign of cloning or a data-entry error on the paperwork worth investigating before you pay.
Odometer fraud (rollback)
Digital odometer rollback tools let sellers dial back the mileage to make a car look less used, inflating its price. Warning signs include:
- Worn pedals, seats, or steering wheel that don't match a low odometer reading
- Service records with gaps, or mileage that doesn't increase consistently between visits
- A sticker or maintenance reminder showing a higher mileage than the odometer displays
- Tires or timing belt due for replacement well before the mileage suggests they should be
Before you buy
Decode the VIN to confirm it matches the vehicle, pull a full vehicle history report to check title and mileage history, and get an independent mechanic's inspection. No single check catches everything — the combination does.
