VIN Decoder vs. Vehicle History Report
These two tools get confused constantly, but they pull from completely different data sources and answer different questions.
What a VIN decoder tells you
A VIN decoder reads the manufacturer's own build data, as reported to NHTSA's vPIC database: make, model, model year, trim, engine, body style, drive type, plant of manufacture, GVWR class, and similar factory specifications. This data comes from the manufacturer at the time the vehicle was built — it does not change over the vehicle's life and has nothing to do with what happened to that specific car afterward.

What a vehicle history report tells you
A vehicle history report (like Carfax or AutoCheck) tracks what happened to that specific vehicle over its life: title records from state DMVs, reported accidents, odometer readings over time, number of owners, service records, salvage or lemon titles, and whether it's ever been flagged as stolen. This data is aggregated from insurers, DMVs, auctions, and repair shops — not from the manufacturer.
Why the difference matters
A VIN decode can tell you a car left the factory as a 2019 model with a V6 and all-wheel drive. It cannot tell you whether that car was in a flood, had three prior owners, or has a rolled-back odometer. For that, you need a history report pulled specifically for that VIN.
Conversely, a history report won't tell you the factory-installed engine or trim if the title data is incomplete — that's where decoding the VIN directly against manufacturer data fills the gap.
Used car buyers: use both
Before buying a used vehicle: decode the VIN to confirm it matches what the seller claims (right make, model, year, engine), then pull a full history report to check for accidents, title issues, and odometer consistency, and get a pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic.
